چکیده

Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) are one dimensional photonic band-gap materials. Due to distributed feedback, low threshold mirrorless lasing can occur in dye-doped and pure CLCs. In order to optimize the lasing conditions, we have studied the dependence of the lasing threshold on dye concentration and sample thickness. In particular, we have studied dye concentrations in the range of 0.1-3.0wt%, and cell thicknesses are in the range of 5-50μm. We have found that the system has a shallow lasing threshold minimum and can operate efficiently in the range of dye concentrations of 0.3-2.4wt% and sample thicknesses of 10-50μm. We discuss the physical processes responsible for the observed behaviour.

Experimental Investigation of Laser Emission of Dye-Doped Cholesteric Liquid Crystals with a Cholesteric Reflector

Dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) behaves like a one-dimensional photonic crystal laser when pumped by a second harmonic Nd-YAG pulsed laser. Usually circularly polarized laser light in the same sense as the cholesteric helix is emitted from both directions of the lasing cell. In this paper, we experimentally demonstrate the laser emission enhancement and investigate the corresponding ...

Lasing in a three-dimensional photonic crystal of the liquid crystal blue phase II.

Photonic-bandgap materials, with periodicity in one, two or three dimensions, offer control of spontaneous emission and photon localization. Low-threshold lasing has been demonstrated in two-dimensional photonic-bandgap materials, both with distributed feedback and defect modes. Liquid crystals with chiral constituents exhibit mesophases with modulated ground states. Helical cholesterics are on...

Lasing properties of a cholesteric liquid crystal containing aggregation-induced-emission material.

We demonstrate band edge lasing action from a cholesteric liquid crystal (CLC) containing an aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) dye as gain material. AIE materials do not suffer aggregation-caused quenching, have strong resistance to photobleaching, and can show large Stokes shift. The amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) and lasing emission of the dye-doped CLC cell have been characterized, th...

Novel dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal cone lasers with various birefringences and associated tunabilities of lasing feature and performance.

This study is the first to investigate novel cone lasers and the tunabilities of their lasing feature and performance based on dye-doped cholesteric liquid crystal (DDCLC) films with various LC birefringences (Δn). A unique conically-symmetric lasing ring with a low energy threshold occurs at a specific nonzero oblique angle (θ(ring)). The low energy threshold is comparable to those for common ...

Ultraviolet lasing in cholesteric liquid crystals.

We report the observation of stimulated emission and mirrorless lasing in pure cholesteric liquid crystals. The lasing action is attributed to the combination of the fluorescence and the distributed feedback that are due to the inherent periodic structure of the liquid crystal. If the reflection band matches the intrinsic emission of the cholesteric liquid crystal, the crystal becomes a natural...
